Q:

Why should I hire a Consultant?

A:

Often a company might have a short-term need based on staffing difficulties, whether because of a reduction in force or a temporary contract. Consultants can help by bringing their experience from multiple companies and disciplines in order to address your problem in a unique and unbiased way.

Q:

Why shouldn't my current workforce handle it?

A:

A Consultant offers a fresh set of eyes without any of the incumbent bias. They are unmoved by internal politics being only focused on the client's ultimate goal. Unlike an established employee, the tenure of a Consultant is short and can be reestablished at any time.

Q:

How much do Consultants cost?

A:

This will depend on what you need is. Most Consultants will propose an hourly rate based on the service required. Certain objectives can be met with a $75/hour whereas more complex goals require specialty training and expertise warranting as much as $250/hour. While this might sound like a large investment at first, it is becoming more common to use Consultants because they end up saving their client money in the long run. These are short-term relationships that do not incur all of the normal employee costs (insurance, workers comp, vacation, etc.) or headaches.

Q:

What should I look for in a Consultant?

A:

First and foremost a Consultant should be a good listener. A Consultant is there solely for the clients benefit not to boast about a resume. Every project is different and you need to be sure that the Consultant you hire will be responsive to what YOU need. A good relationship with your Consultant is essential! In addition, they should carry certifications from the appropriate groups in their field, (ex.PMI) and be willing to share previous client references with you. Their educational and professional background also play an important role. Keep in mind size does matter. Frequently large consulting firms are not only more expensive but tend to have set "consulting techniques" or processes whereas a smaller firm is more likely to be flexible and look at your project holistically. It is also important to remember that a Consultant is there in an advisory position. You, as the client, have the final say in key decisions.
